Why Is My Hair Frizzy in The Summer?

Summer means plenty of sunshine, swimming, and outdoor time. But for many people, summer can also mean frizz! If you’re wondering why this is the case, we’ve got good news! This article will examine why the summer can make your hair frizzy and give you a few tips on how to keep your locks perfectly smooth.

Your Hair Is Probably Getting Damaged

While most people tend to stay indoors during the winter, the opposite is true for summer. Spending time outside exposes your hair to harsh environmental elements like sunlight, salt water, pollution, and chlorine. The more time you spend outside, the more likely you are to be left with hair that looks dry and frizzy.

You Live Somewhere with High Humidity

As you probably know, going outside on a hot, humid day is the quickest way to turn your freshly coiffed hair into a rat's nest. Wondering why that’s the case? Dry strands are desperate for moisture and will reach out to the water molecules in moist air. Because heat opens your hair’s cuticle, water can pass freely into your strands and change their shape, resulting in frizz and tangles.

The A/C Is Drying Out Your Locks

Unfortunately, your time indoors can damage your hair just as much as going outside can. Air conditioners suck moisture out of the air, and dry air can leave your hair frizzy and brittle in no time. And if your hair is already chronically dry, the A/C will just make it worse.

How To Fight Summer Frizz

Now that you understand why your hair gets frizzy in the summer, it's time to learn how to prevent it! Here are a few tips to help you fight summer frizz.

  • Switch to a microfiber towel - Regular towels are harsh on your strands, so switching to a microfiber towel can help cut down on damage. They also dry your hair faster and more effectively. Since going outside with damp hair makes your hair frizzier, thoroughly drying your hair will keep your strands smooth.

  • Rinse your hair with cold water - Cold showers are a refreshing way to beat the summer heat and keep colored hair bright and vibrant. Cold water also seals your cuticles, which helps block out humidity and leaves your strands smooth and shiny.

  • Give your hair plenty of moisture - Dry hair responds to high humidity much more than moisturized hair. If you’re having trouble with frizz, switch to a more hydrating shampoo and always follow up with your favorite nourishing conditioner, hydrating leave-in, and hair-loving masks.

  • Use oils on your hair - As you know, keeping your hair hydrated is the best way to fight frizz. Although they don’t moisturize your hair, oils lock in water and keep your hair hydrated for much longer. They also give your strands some much-needed vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Here are a few of our favorite hair-healthy oils.

    • Olive oil

    • Castor oil

    • Coconut oil

    • Argan oil

So, there you have it! There are many reasons why summer can leave your strands feeling dry and frizzy. Luckily, you have just as many ways to fight it! We hope this article has everything you need to fight the frizz and keep your hair looking great all summer!
