Thick Hair Care Tips

There are so many benefits to having thick hair. Updo's and ponytails appear full and voluminous. Braids are thick. You are the envy of many women.

However, keeping up with thick hair is no easy task. With more hair comes more work. You battle, tangles, poofiness, bedhead, and humidity, to name a few. But there are some easy ways you can manage your thick hair that can save you tons of time and keep your hair looking on point.

 

What Does Thick Hair Mean?

Thick hair refers to the size of each hair strand and the density of hair on the scalp. You can tell if you have thick hair by the amount of visible skin you can see on your scalp. The less scalp you see, the more hair you have.

 

How Do You Get Thick Hair?

Some are lucky enough to hit the genetics jackpot and are born with thick hair. Others have to work a little harder to get thick hair through lifestyle changes that support natural hair growth.

Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding heat tools are a few ways to achieve thicker, fuller hair.

 

How to Manage Thick Hair?

1. Apply Leave-In Conditioner BEFORE brushing

If your thick hair is prone to tangles, brushing through knots can be time consuming and painful. A quick and easy way to manage thick hair and tangles is to apply a leave-in conditioner to your hair before brushing and washing.

By doing so leaves a moisture barrier on the hair shaft and makes it easier for a brush or comb to glide through the hair without breaking it.

2. Skip-Out on Shampooing Every Day

If you wash your hair every day, you will be missing out on the benefits of natural oils produced on your scalp. Without natural oil, hair can appear dull.

3. Follow the Recommended Amount of Conditioner

It's tempting to squeeze out an insane amount of conditioner and coat your hair in it because it feels so soft. But when conditioning hair after shampooing, less is more.

Using too much heavy conditioner every day will leave build-up on your hair, weighing hair down even more.

4. Air-Dry... But Not All of the Way

With thicker and longer hair, blow-drying can take forever, and going to bed with wet hair is not an option. Instead of blow-drying soaking wet hair immediately after washing, give it some time to air dry.

However, don't let it completely air dry, though. Make sure it is still damp. Doing so will allow you to have control over your hair without applying an extensive amount of damaging heat.

5. Don't Skip Out on Trims and Cuts

One way to give your hair definition is to have your stylist use thinning shears when getting a haircut. Using this type of scissors alleviates some of the weight of hair while adding volume and texture, making it easier to style.

 

Does Leave-In Conditioner Weigh Thick Hair Down?

Thick hair is heavy enough, and some fear adding more products will only weigh it down even further. While this is true with many products on the market today, using a leave-in conditioner with a light-weight formula, such as Daily Dose Leave-In Conditioner, won't.

 It will give your hair the moisture it needs without leaving build-up, leaving your thick hair soft, shiny, and healthy.
