Haircare Myths and Facts

Learning about hair can be difficult sometimes. There is seemingly endless information out there about our hair, and only a fraction of it is reliable. So, how do you sift through it all to find the facts? That’s what this article is for. In it, we’ll share some haircare myths and facts that’ll change the way you look at and care for your hair. Let’s get right into it!

Myth 1: Trimming your hair increases your hair growth rate.

Fact: Trimming your hair does not increase your hair growth rate. Everyone’s hair grows about a half inch per month no matter how much they trim the ends. But keeping up with your trims may increase your length retention - the amount of length you retain on your head.

If you have a ton of split ends and damage, that hair may eventually break off, reducing your length retention. But if you cut off the damage and split ends, the remaining hair will be healthier and will likely stick around (not break off prematurely). As a result, you’ll enjoy longer hair over time due to improved length retention.

Myth 2: You have to wash your hair every single day.

Fact: Though some people may need to wash their hair frequently due to daily swimming or workouts, this won’t be the case for the majority of people. It’s best to space out your shampoo sessions here and there to ensure you’re not drying your hair out or irritating your scalp.

Most people can get away with washing their hair every few days to a week. A more relaxed hair-washing routine can preserve your hair and scalp’s hydration and moisture levels.

Myth 3: When you pull a gray hair out, two more grow in its place.

Fact: This myth has no factual basis. If you pull a gray hair, chances are one will grow back. The real thing to worry about with pulling out your gray hair is the possible scenario where you damage your hair follicles and no hair grows back. Then, you could be dealing with thinning hair and balding.

Myth 4: Hats cause hair loss.

Fact: Hats do not inherently cause hair loss. Many wear them without any issues. But if your specific hat is too tight for your head and cuts off circulation to your hair follicles, you could see some hair loss where the hat meets your scalp. Again, wearing a well-fitting hat won’t cause this issue – only ill-fitting hats.

Myth 5: Leave-in conditioner makes your hair greasy.

Fact: The vast majority of leave-in conditioners will not make your hair greasy, specifically if you use them correctly and choose the right one for your hair type and condition. They are usually formulated to be extremely lightweight to prevent this issue. Still, overapplying or otherwise misusing hair products in general can result in greasy hair. Overwashing can also turn your hair into an oil slick. But leave-ins aren’t usually a culprit.

So, there you have it – 5 myths and facts about haircare. We hope that you found all the information you were looking for. Don’t forget to check out Daily Dose – it’s an ultra-hydrating leave-in conditioner for all hair types. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re missing out!
