Is It Necessary to Use a Hair Mask?

When you go to your local beauty supply store or shop online, you’re bombarded by the sheer volume of products you could throw into your cart. Most people know they need to pick up some hair cleanser and conditioner, but one product type that sits in a grayer area is hair masks. Many wonder whether these products are essential to a healthy hair care routine. If you’re wondering the same, this is the article for you. We’ll help you determine whether a hair mask is necessary for you.

You May Need a Hair Mask

First, you should know that hair masks are not always necessary 100% of the time. Some people need them desperately, while others may not. Moreover, you may need a hair mask only at certain points in your hair journey. So, to answer whether a hair mask is necessary, you’d have to look at your natural hair’s condition.

Signs You Need a Hair Mask

One of the easiest ways to determine whether you need a hair mask is to examine your hair. What is it telling you? Several overt signs could indicate that you need a hair mask sooner rather than later. These signs include:

  • Moderate to severe split ends. It’s normal to have a few split ends here and there, but if there are many, that’s a sign that you could use a hair mask to prevent further split ends. Just so you know, a hair mask will not repair split ends - the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off.

  • Chronic or severe hair dryness. Is your hair drier than the Sahara? If so, then your hair could use a pick-me-up in the form of a hair mask. The vast majority of hair masks can hydrate and moisturize your hair

  • More frizz than usual. Frizz is something that most of us deal with, and it can make styling difficult. Hair masks often contain oils and emollients that smooth down your hair’s cuticles and minimize frizz

  • Chemical damage. Anytime you add chemicals to the equation - color, relaxers, bleach, perms, or the like - your hair is changed forever. For some people, it’s dryness; for others, it’s split ends and breakage. The most unlucky ones have to deal with all three and more. Hair masks, specifically those containing protein, help to restore the hair’s strength and resilience, giving you a stronger, more beautiful mane.

  • Persistent tangles. Tangles are often due to hair dryness or raised cuticles (often caused by damage). If your hair seems to tangle up soon after detangling, or you’re having trouble detangling it, a hair mask can help. These products are usually slippery, and because of this, they help the hairs glide past each other more easily. This saves you time and frustration while detangling.

Here are a few other signs that you could use a hair mask:

  • Your hair breaks easily.

  • Your hair lacks shine.

  • Your hair is regularly exposed to the elements and needs additional protection.

So, there you have it - hair masks may be necessary, but only if you have a hair condition or concern they can help with. If you’re on the fence, read this article to find out if hair masks might be worth it.
